It’s natural to feel anxious if you have an upcoming dental procedure that might hurt, like a tooth extraction. Although your dentist will apply a local anesthetic to help you feel comfortable, you might still be nervous about your upcoming appointment.
Fortunately, there are several things you can do to remain calm and relaxed. Continue reading to learn about 3 helpful tips that can help you overcome your fear of having your troublesome tooth extracted!
Tip #1: Breathe Deeply
Did you know that your body doesn’t really know the difference between a real threat and a perceived one? Your fear about your upcoming visit can trigger your fight-or-flight response, preparing your system to either confront the situation or flee. This can result in physical symptoms, such as dilated pupils, sweating, rapid breathing, tense muscles, and increased heart rate.
If you’re feeling triggered at the dentist’s office, breathing deeply into your belly (diaphragmatic breathing) can literally soothe your system. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” response), which signals to your brain and body that you are safe. It also stimulates the vagus nerve and increases blood flow, sending oxygen to your brain that reduces the output of stress hormones, like cortisol.
Tip #2: Listen to Music
Another way to potentially calm your nerves is to listen to music. Soothing beats and slow tempos can help you take a few deep breaths and relax. This technique can be incredibly effective in reducing anxiety and providing a distraction from worrisome thoughts.
You can ask your dentist whether they provide headphones or if you can bring your earbuds to your procedure. Then, you can tune into your favorite playlist, podcast, or audiobook to keep your mind preoccupied.
Tip #3: Ask for Help
Sometimes, even with deep breathing and soothing sounds, fear can get the best of you. If you’re still concerned about your procedure, you can ask for help! For example, bringing a supportive friend to wait with you might provide some peace of mind.
However, you can also ask your dentist whether they offer any other amenities that might help, such as dental sedation. Many providers are licensed to administer medications, such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas), that can help you feel comfortable throughout your visit. This is inhaled through a mask that’s placed over your nose while your dentist works. It typically doesn’t “knock you out”, but can induce a lightweight and sometimes euphoric sensation that reduces your body’s response to external stimuli.
Finally, if you still feel worried, you can consult your dentist. They typically don’t mind answering as many questions as it takes for you to feel confident moving forward with the required treatment!
