Are you feeling self-conscious about discolored teeth? You’re not alone! Millions of people every year turn to cosmetic dentistry for solutions to brighten their smile like teeth whitening treatments or porcelain veneers. Though both therapies can be used to lighten your teeth, they’re very different procedures and it’s important to understand them in more detail to make an informed decision. Keep reading to learn more so you can determine the best method to whiten your teeth.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening refers to the process in which a chemical solution containing bleaching agents is applied to your pearly whites to remove surface stains. Though there are plenty of over-the-counter products like whitening strips or toothpaste, these are known for being abrasive and can wear down your enamel or cause sensitivity.

Your dentist, meanwhile, is a trained professional with access to high-quality solutions that are more effective and don’t cause discomfort. They can remove years’ worth of blemishes in a single, hour-long visit. If that doesn’t suit you, they can also provide take-home kits with professional-grade bleach and customized trays.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Though teeth whitening solutions can effectively eliminate stains from the outside of your tooth, some discoloration originates from the inside and cannot be bleached away. For example, some people notice their teeth appear darker because their enamel has worn down and the yellow layer underneath becomes more visible. Others have dingier teeth due to genetics or prescription medications.

In cases like these, your dentist can hide the problem with porcelain veneers. These thin shells are made from durable ceramic and are affixed to the front of your tooth to cover aesthetic flaws. They’re coated with a glaze that makes them both stain and chip-resistant and can be customized to match the rest of your pearly whites.

Which Option is Best for Me?

Only your dentist can accurately verify which treatment is ideal for your circumstances. It depends on the types of stains, your budget, and your current oral health. Those who have external stains on their teeth can effectively remove them through teeth whitening procedures that are relatively inexpensive compared to the alternative. If you’re dealing with internal discoloration, then bleaching them won’t be effective so your dentist will likely recommend veneers. This solution is permanent and is more costly than teeth whitening procedures, but still enhances your smile by masking imperfections.

If you have additional questions, be sure to ask your dentist. They can walk you through the ins and outs of both therapies, so you have a comprehensive understanding of your options. Whatever you decide, you’ll soon be on your way to having the wonderful, white smile you deserve!
