Nearly half of adults over 30 in the U.S. struggle with some form of it, which means this condition may be more common than most people realize. That’s largely because certain risk factors can make someone more susceptible to this condition. Here are four to be aware of.

Poor Oral Hygiene Habits

Falling behind on brushing or flossing is often the leading cause of gum disease. When bacteria are allowed to build up along the gumline, they attack the surrounding soft tissue. You may notice early signs like redness and inflammation, but you can avoid trouble by staying consistent with your dental hygiene and removing plaque that’s the issue.

Age and Genetics

The risk for periodontal disease tends to increase with age, with about 68% of adults 65 and older affected by some form of it. This is largely due to the natural changes the body goes through over time.

Genetics can also play a role, as some people are more prone to inflammation from bacteria than others. That said, these factors don’t guarantee you’ll develop this condition. By staying consistent with brushing, flossing, and a balanced diet, you can make a difference at home.

Smoke or Chew Tobacco

Tobacco can contribute to gum disease because it dries the mouth. Without enough saliva, plaque can linger and cause harm. Smoking and chewing this product can also weaken your immune system. This makes it harder for your body to fight off infections.

If you’re looking to quit, finding a new hobby, like exercise, can be a helpful distraction. Professional support is another option if you need extra guidance along the way.

Some Medications

Certain medications list dry mouth as a side effect, which can raise your risk of gum disease. If this is true for you, it’s worth mentioning it to your physician. You shouldn’t stop taking the prescribed medicine you need without their guidance, but they may be able to make some changes to reduce the severity. You should also drink water throughout the day to keep your mouth hydrated.

Several factors can contribute to gum disease, but having one doesn’t mean it’s inevitable to develop it. Taking time to identify which ones are true to you and addressing them can go a long way in keeping your smile healthy.

About the Author

Dr. Karen Neil earned her dental degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
